Total Immersion, a company that creates augmented reality (AR) software, has announced that it has teamed with Olympus to create an AR version of the Olympus Pen E-PL1.

The browser-based application will let consumers explore and “use” a full-featured virtual 3D model of the Olympus Pen E-PL1, an compact camera with interchangeable lenses and a Micro Four Thirds sensor. The E-PL1 was reviewed here in April 2010 and awarded an Editor’s Choice.

The virtual tour of the E-PL1 is triggered by placing a marker, a life-sized printed replica of the camera, in front of a webcam, while running the application. The marker can be downloaded from the Get Olympus Pen website. Additionally, it will be available as an insert in Wired and Popular Photography magazines. Once the tour begins, the user can not only explore the physical aspects of the E-PL1 but can also take photos, create videos (which can be loaded onto YouTube), use the flash and apply the in-camera art filters, either while holding the virtual camera or mounting it on a virtual tripod.

For additional information about the virtual tour of the Olympus Pen E-PL1, including links to the application and a demo that shows what to expect, see the Olympus website.
